The Best Apps to Have When Traveling around New Zealand

30th Oct 14

A wealth of information, keeping in contact with friends and family around the world, sharing on social media and accessing the latest news are just some of the things the smart little device in your pocket can do.

Utilise these features when traveling around our spectacular country by downloading apps. Whether you’re camping, looking for things to do and see, want to get local information or keep up with news from around the country and the world, we’ve found the perfect group of apps that are easy to use and full of accurate, up-to-date information.

Travel and accommodation

Built specifically for travelling around New Zealand, these apps will give you the information you need to decide which places to visit, what activities to try and where to stay.

Offical Camping Map NZ

  • Price: Free
  • Available on: Android, iPhone, Tablet
  • Offline mode: Yes

This is my favourite camping app, and well used on my campervan getaways. Camping locations, dumpstations and more, this app will show you where they are and guide you to get there. It works great offline, and you can view at a glance what others experiences have been that have gone before you. Make sure you download it at home on stable wifi as the offline maps are large.

The Essential New Zealand Travel Guide

  • Price: Free
  • Available on: Android, iPhone, tablet
  • Offline mode: Yes

This is the easy-to-use app version of the 100% Pure New Zealand website. The app will recommend experiences and give you up-to-date information that can be accessed offline. Browse by area or type of activity, view pre-planned itineraries and use the distance calculator to map your trip.

After a quick sign up, you’ll be able to create your own trip itinerary with anything you like from the listed experiences and accommodation options. These sync with the website so you can access your information on any computer too.

Lists many useful things such as campsites, dumpstations, supermarkets and more, but be warning this app 'always' works in the background and as a result I haven't used an app that drains my smart battery more, if you download this I recommend you do as I always do and go into settings and switch it on and off just while I use it. If you forget to do this expect a very shortened battery life.
