Motorhome Trips from Picton

Picton is situated within the Marlborough region and is often referred to as the gateway town to the greater Marlborough Sounds.

Picton has plenty to see and do, you can stroll down High Street with its many galleries, shops and cafes and onto the foreshore for a picnic. If you want to enjoy the scenery there are a number of eco-tours and guided walks.

When you are ready to explore further, there are a range of options which will depend on the amount of time you have to spend in the South Island.

Here we look at a couple of ideas:

Marlborough Sounds - The sounds are made up of a number of smaller bays. Much of this area is largely untouched and only accessible by boat. In summer you are sure to get a photograph or two of the green-blue sea glistening in the sunshine.

Nelson - The sunshine capital of New Zealand where you can enjoy arts and crafts, vineyards, beaches and variety of outdoor activities. (For more information visit our Nelson page).

Motueka – Experience long summer days and mild winters in the town of the Abel Tasman National Park. There are plenty of family activities to take part in here.

  • From here you can also travel on to Murchison and over the West Coast.

Kaiteriteri – The beach here is very popular with holiday makers. Enjoy swimming in the clear blue sea or sunbathing on the golden beach.

Takaka – Situated at the south east end of Golden Bay, which is famous for the clear waters of Te Waikoropupu Springs or ‘Pupu Springs’ – a must see for anyone travelling to this area.

From Takaka you can also travel to the northern most point of the South Island – Farewell Spit.

If you want to take a different route with your motorhome rental, here are some more ideas:

Blenheim – a popular town in the Marlborough region where you can sit on the banks of the Taylor River in the central township, with the kids and feed the ducks or enjoy a coffee from one of the local coffee shops.

Kaikoura – talk to anyone who has been to Kaikoura and they are likely to tell you that this is the spot for whale watching, swimming with seals and enjoying a local crayfish dish.

Hanmer Springs – popular for its hot springs, Hanmer is a village town perfect for a lazy weekend or retreat. There are some great bush walks not far from town or jump aboard an aircraft to see the alpine surroundings.

Cheviot – Whilst there isn’t a huge amount to explore in Cheviot it’s a great place to stop for a cuppa and a stretch of the legs. During the weekend there is a market where you can buy local arts, crafts and produce.

Christchurch – the second largest city in New Zealand and aptly named the ‘Garden City’ Christchurch is home to Hagley Park in the central city where you can bike, run or stroll through the Botanical Gardens.

Take a look at our Christchurch page for more ideas on where to travel to from here.
